The house sparrow (Passer domesticus) is a passerine bird that is common in Europe, the Mediterranean and Asia. Because it has been introduced to many parts of the world, it is the most widely distributed bird. In 1852, 50 English pairs were released in Brooklyn, New York, and it is now one of the most abundant birds in North America. House sparrows roost communally, eat mostly cereals and weeds, and mate for life.
