Wren (Enlarge)

Photographed in Upton Warren, Worcestershire, UK, in October 2010.

The winter wren (Troglodytes troglodytes) is the only wren to be found in the Old World. According to folklore, it is the king of the birds. This accolade was awarded during a competition to see who could fly the highest. The Eagle was winning, but as it began to tire the wren emerged from under its tail feathers and soared far above. Thus, cleverness is more important than strength.
